Quick Answer
A flat energy drink usually means lost carbonation from temperature swings, age, or a loose seal. The fastest fix is to chill it thoroughly and drink it soon after opening; if it's been open for hours, no trick will bring back the fizz.
Why Carbonation Fades
Carbon dioxide escapes from an open can or bottle over time, and warmth speeds up the process. Even unopened cans lose fizz if stored in a hot car or near a heat source, because pressure changes can compromise the seal.
A can that was shaken or dropped may also release gas more quickly once opened. The result is a dull, syrupy taste that masks the intended flavor profile.
When to Stop Trying
If the drink has been open for more than a few hours, or if it tastes flat before the expiration date and the can is damaged, don't force it. The flavor and caffeine experience won't be the same, and it's better to open a fresh can.
Check the can for dents, leaks, or bulging—these can indicate spoilage or contamination. When in doubt, throw it out.
Diagnose and Fix Your Flat Energy Drink
- Symptom: The drink tastes dull, syrupy, or lacks the usual sharp bite.
- Likely Cause: Carbon dioxide has escaped due to an open container, warm storage, or a damaged seal.
- Corrective Action: Chill the can to 40°F or colder, then swirl gently to redistribute any remaining gas. If it's unopened, store it in the fridge and avoid temperature swings. Always store energy drinks in a cool, dark place to slow carbonation loss.
- Stop or Switch: If the drink has been open for over 4 hours, or if the can is damaged or past its best-by date, discard it and open a fresh one. When in doubt, a new can is the safest and best-tasting choice.
