Quick answer
A firm crib mattress reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and suffocation, ensuring your baby's airway stays open during sleep.
What makes a mattress firm enough for a baby?
A safe infant mattress should not conform to your baby's head or body shape. When you press down on the mattress, it should spring back immediately and not leave an indentation. The AAP recommends placing your baby on a firm, flat sleep surface covered only by a fitted sheet.
Can a too-soft mattress harm my baby?
Yes. Soft mattresses can create a pocket around the baby's face, trapping exhaled carbon dioxide and increasing the risk of suffocation. Even if your baby can roll over, a soft surface may hinder their ability to lift or turn their head.
Frequently asked questions about firm crib mattresses
How do I test if a mattress is firm enough?
Use the firmness test: press the mattress center with your palm. It should barely give and bounce back quickly. Another method: place a can of soda on the mattress; if it sinks, the mattress is too soft.
Can I use a secondhand or previously used mattress?
Only if it meets current safety standards (no sagging, no tears, firm surface) and has never been used in a home where someone smoked. Avoid mattresses that have been recalled or are older than 10 years. Always check CPSC recall lists before buying a used crib mattress.
Does mattress firmness matter after the first year?
Yes, but the risk decreases. Once your baby is over 12 months and can roll independently, the risk of SIDS drops significantly. A firm mattress still promotes good posture and safe sleep habits. Even for toddlers, keep the mattress firm and avoid adding pillows or soft bedding.
