Quick Answer
Assemble the AeroTech RMS-54/1706 motor hardware by greasing the O-rings, installing the forward seal disc, and threading the closures onto the aluminum case. Motor reloads are sold separately.
Why Proper Assembly Matters
The AeroTech RMS-54/1706 hardware set is built to be reused with multiple reload kits. A clean, correctly greased assembly prevents combustion gas leaks that could damage the rocket or cause a misfire.
This guide covers the reusable aluminum case, forward closure, forward seal disc, aft closure, and the included Super-Lube grease. Reload kits are not included and must be purchased separately.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Skipping grease on the O-rings is the most frequent error. Dry O-rings can tear during assembly or fail to seal under pressure.
Installing the forward seal disc backward is another common issue. The flat side must face the forward closure, not the propellant.
Assembly Steps
- Inspect and Clean All Parts: Wipe the aluminum case, forward closure, forward seal disc, and aft closure with a clean cloth to remove dust or debris. Check threads for nicks or burrs. A damaged thread can cause cross-threading; replace any part with visible damage.
- Grease the O-Rings: Apply a thin, even coat of the supplied Super-Lube grease to all O-rings on the forward and aft closures. Avoid excess grease that could drip into the case. Too much grease can attract dirt or ooze into the propellant cavity during assembly.
- Install the Forward Seal Disc: Place the forward seal disc into the forward end of the aluminum case with the flat side facing the forward closure. Press it in until it seats evenly against the case shoulder. If the disc is tilted, it may not seal; gently rock it into place using a blunt tool if needed.
- Thread the Forward Closure: Screw the forward closure into the case by hand until snug. Do not overtighten; use only moderate hand torque. Overtightening can deform the seal disc or damage the threads. A snug fit is sufficient.
- Insert the Reload Kit: Follow the reload kit instructions to insert the propellant grains and delay element into the case from the aft end. Ensure the grains are aligned and the delay faces forward. Reload kits are not included; always verify the reload matches the RMS-54/1706 hardware.
- Install the Aft Closure: Grease the aft closure O-ring, then thread it into the case by hand until it contacts the case shoulder. Tighten an additional 1/8 turn with a wrench if required by the reload instructions. Some reloads specify a torque value; check the reload sheet before using a wrench to avoid crushing the delay element.
- Final Check: Ensure both closures are seated evenly and the case is free of gaps. Store the assembled hardware upright until launch. A gap at either closure indicates improper seating; disassemble and recheck the seal disc and O-rings.
