Quick answer
Ancient Realm is a 18-card wallet game where you build a civilization by placing blocks on a grid, managing resources, and balancing end-game scoring goals. Setup takes under a minute, and a full game runs 15–20 minutes.
What makes Ancient Realm different from other wallet games
Unlike many Button Shy titles that focus on hand management or trick-taking, Ancient Realm is a spatial puzzle. You place and overlay cards to build a 3x3 grid, deciding which blocks to keep and which to build over. This creates a tight economy of space and resources that rewards planning ahead.
The game also introduces multiple end-game scoring conditions that can shift your priorities mid-game. You are never locked into a single path, but every choice closes off another opportunity.
Common mistakes new players make
The most frequent error is ignoring the end-game scoring goals until the final round. Because you only have 9 card slots, you need to think about which blocks you want to score from the very first placement.
Another trap is over-harvesting resources early. While resources are essential, hoarding them without a plan to spend them on buildings or upgrades can leave you with a grid full of low-value blocks.
How to set up and play Ancient Realm
- 1. Set up the grid: Shuffle the 18 cards and deal 9 face down into a 3x3 grid. The remaining 9 cards form your draw deck. Flip the first card of the draw deck face up to start your hand. Do not look at the face-down cards yet — they are unknown until you reveal them with a harvest action.
- 2. Understand the card anatomy: Each card has a block type (field, forest, mountain, water, or settlement) and a resource icon. Some cards also show an end-game scoring condition. You will place cards on top of existing grid cards to build over them. The resource icon on a card is only collected when you harvest that card, not when you build over it.
- 3. Take your turn: choose an action: On your turn, you may either harvest a face-up card from your hand (add its resource to your pool and discard it) or place a card from your hand onto any empty or occupied grid space, building over whatever is there. Building over a card destroys it permanently — you do not get its resource. Only harvest if you need that resource now.
- 4. Manage your resources: Resources (food, wood, stone, gold) are spent to place certain cards. If you cannot pay the cost, you cannot place that card. You can hold up to 5 resources at a time. If your hand is full of expensive cards you cannot afford, you may need to harvest lower-value cards just to clear space.
- 5. Score at game end: After all 9 grid spaces are filled (each with a face-up card), add up points from each block type according to the end-game scoring goals printed on the cards you placed. The player with the highest score wins. Some scoring goals reward sets or majorities, so spreading your blocks evenly can be as effective as focusing on one type.
About the game
-
Ancient Realm: At its heart, Ancient Realm is a civilization-building-themed puzzle game, where you're trying to maximize your points by deciding what blocks to keep and what blocks to build over, carefully managing your resources, and balancing end game scoring goal needs with immediate needs. This means every turn is a trade-off between short-term gain and long-term scoring, so you must constantly re-evaluate your grid.
