Quick Answer
To install Strider Classic Grips, remove the old grips, slide on the new ones with a bit of rubbing alcohol for lubrication, and let them set for 24 hours before riding.
Why Replace the Grips?
Over time, original grips can wear out, get sticky, or become too small for a growing child. Swapping them for Strider Classic Grips gives a fresh, custom look and better comfort. These soft-touch TPR grips are designed to fit Strider 14x, 12 Classic, and 12 Comp bikes, so compatibility is straightforward.
What You'll Need
You only need a few basic tools: a flathead screwdriver or a thin pry tool to remove the old grips, a small bottle of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), and a clean rag. No special bike tools are required, making this a true DIY job.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Remove the Old Grips: Use a flathead screwdriver or a thin pry tool to gently lift the edge of the old grip. Slide the tool underneath and work it around the grip to break the seal. Once loose, twist and pull the grip off the handlebar. If it's stuck, apply a few drops of rubbing alcohol under the grip to loosen it. Don't yank the grip off forcefully—you could damage the handlebar or the grip itself.
- Clean the Handlebar Ends: Wipe the exposed metal handlebar ends with a clean rag to remove any dirt, adhesive residue, or old grip fragments. A clean surface helps the new grip slide on smoothly and stay in place. Skipping this step can cause the new grip to slip or not seat fully.
- Lubricate the Inside of the New Grip: Spray or pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol into the new Strider Classic Grip. Swirl it around to coat the inside evenly. The alcohol acts as a temporary lubricant, making the grip easy to slide onto the handlebar. Do not use oil or grease—they will prevent the grip from drying and bonding to the bar.
- Slide the Grip onto the Handlebar: Align the grip with the handlebar end and push it on firmly. Twist the grip slightly as you push to help it seat evenly. Make sure the grip covers the full length of the handlebar and sits flush against the end cap or bar end. If the grip stops short, add a bit more alcohol and keep pushing—do not force it with a hammer.
- Let the Grip Set: Allow the rubbing alcohol to evaporate completely. This usually takes about 24 hours. During this time, the grip will shrink slightly and form a tight, secure bond with the handlebar. Keep the bike indoors and avoid riding until the grip is fully set. Riding too soon can cause the grip to spin or slide off, especially if the alcohol hasn't fully dried.
