Quick answer

In Really Loud Librarians, players take turns shouting word clues while their teammate guesses, all while trying to stay quiet enough not to get caught by the Librarian. The game ends when a team collects a set number of cards. Setup takes under a minute and rounds last about 15 minutes.

What You Need to Play

Really Loud Librarians: Grab & Game Edition is a travel-friendly card game for 4 to 8 players. The box contains a deck of word cards, a Librarian token, and a rules sheet. No additional components are required, making it ideal for game nights, trips, or parties.

Setting Up the Game

Divide players into two teams. Shuffle the word card deck and place it face down in the center. Choose one player to be the first Librarian — this player will monitor noise levels and enforce the silence rule. The Librarian sits or stands where they can see all players. Each team designates a clue-giver and a guesser for the first round.

Step-by-Step Gameplay

  1. Start the Round: The clue-giver draws the top card from the deck and reads the word silently. They then have 30 seconds to shout one-word clues to their teammate, who tries to guess the word on the card. The Librarian watches for any rule-breaking. Common mistake: clue-givers accidentally say part of the word. If they do, the round ends and no point is awarded.
  2. Guessing and Scoring: If the guesser says the exact word on the card before time runs out, the team keeps the card as a point. If time expires or the clue-giver breaks a rule, the card is discarded. Play passes to the next team. Checkpoint: The guesser must say the exact word — synonyms or close guesses don't count.
  3. Librarian Actions: The Librarian can call out any player who speaks above a whisper during another team's turn. If a player is caught, their team loses a card (if they have any) or skips their next turn. The Librarian role rotates each round. Common mistake: players forget the Librarian can penalize any noise, not just shouting. Stay silent even during other teams' turns.
  4. Winning the Game: The first team to collect 5 cards wins. If both teams reach 5 cards in the same round, play one more tie-breaker round. The game typically lasts 15–20 minutes. For a shorter game, play to 3 cards. For a longer session, increase the target to 7 cards.
