Quick answer

Loop Toss is a simple lawn game where players throw rings over a stake in the ground. Points are earned based on the difficulty of each successful toss.

What you need to play

The Loop Toss set includes one stake and six rings. The stake drives easily into soft ground, so you can set up on grass, sand, or dirt. No batteries or assembly required — just a flat outdoor space.

Choosing a throwing distance

The game works best when players agree on a throwing line before starting. A distance of 8 to 12 feet from the stake gives a fair challenge for both kids and adults. Closer distances make scoring easier for younger players.

How to play Loop Toss: step by step

  1. Step 1: Drive the stake into the ground: Push the stake into soft ground until it stands upright and stable. On hard or dry soil, tap it gently with a mallet or rock. Check that it does not wobble. A wobbly stake will cause rings to bounce off unfairly — re-seat it if needed.
  2. Step 2: Mark the throwing line: Use a stick, shoe, or piece of string to mark a line 8–12 feet from the stake. All players must throw from behind this line. Agree on the distance before the first throw to avoid mid-game disputes.
  3. Step 3: Take turns throwing rings: Each player throws one ring at a time, underhand or overhand, aiming to loop it over the stake. A ring that lands on the ground without touching the stake scores zero points. An underhand toss with a gentle arc often gives more control than an overhand throw.
  4. Step 4: Score each successful toss: A ring that loops over the stake earns 3 points. A ring that hits the stake but falls off earns 1 point. Rings that miss score 0. The first player to reach 21 points wins. If multiple players tie at 21, continue one round at a time until someone leads by at least 2 points.
  5. Step 5: Play additional rounds or vary the distance: After a winner is decided, you can increase the throwing distance for a harder challenge, or split into teams for a cooperative game. Moving the line back by 3 feet changes the game significantly — great for keeping experienced players engaged.
