Quick answer
To win Master Thief, prioritize high-value Museum Cards early, keep one Action Card in reserve for a clean escape, and watch how many items your opponents have already stolen. The player who escapes with the most valuable collection wins, not the one who grabs the most items.
Read the Museum Cards before you move
Museum Cards are designed with way-finding to guide your actions throughout the game. Before you commit to a steal, trace the path on the card and note which items are reachable this turn. A common mistake is grabbing the first shiny item you see instead of the one that sets up a safer or more valuable next turn.
Time your Action Cards for the escape, not the steal
Action Cards represent what you are up to in the darkness of the museum. New players often spend them early to grab a low-value item. Instead, hold at least one Action Card until you have a high-value haul, then use it to foil opponents’ attempts to catch you or to slip away clean. The threat of an unplayed Action Card can also make rivals hesitate.
Track what opponents have stolen
With 3-6 players, the museum empties fast. Keep a rough count of how many valuable items each opponent has taken. If one player is ahead, you may need to target the same high-value items or use Action Cards to disrupt their escape rather than starting a new low-value pile.
Know when to bail out
Master Thief plays in 15-20 minutes, so every turn counts. If you have a solid collection and the museum is nearly empty, escaping now is often better than risking a failed grab. A common mistake is staying one turn too long and getting caught with nothing to show for it.
Your turn-by-turn heist plan
- Scout the Museum Card: At the start of your turn, read the Museum Card’s way-finding layout and identify the highest-value item you can reach this turn. Checkpoint: If two items are equally valuable, pick the one that leaves you closer to an exit.
- Steal with a purpose: Take the item that either boosts your total value or blocks an opponent who is close to winning. Avoid grabbing low-value items just because they are easy. Common mistake: Taking the first available item instead of the best one for your position.
- Hold one Action Card: Keep at least one Action Card unplayed until you have a high-value collection. Use it to escape or to foil an opponent’s attempt to catch you. Checkpoint: If you have no Action Cards left, play more conservatively until you draw one.
- Watch the table: Count how many valuable items each opponent has stolen. If someone is ahead, focus on disrupting their next steal or escape. Common mistake: Ignoring opponents until it is too late to stop their winning haul.
- Escape at the right moment: When you have a strong collection and the museum is running low, escape before you risk getting caught. Do not stay for one more item if it jeopardizes your whole haul. Checkpoint: If you can win by escaping now, do it—do not give opponents a chance to catch up.
