Quick answer

Use shaker sequins by layering them inside a foam-backed window on your card front. The key is to seal the cavity completely so the sequins move freely without escaping.

Why shaker sequins work for card making

Shaker sequins add motion and sound to a card, making it interactive. The tiny iridescent discs catch light and shift with every tilt, which is why they are a favorite for birthday, thank-you, and celebration cards. Unlike flat embellishments, shaker sequins create a playful element that recipients remember.

Choosing the right sequins for your shaker card

Not all sequins are the same size or weight. For a standard shaker card, use small to medium sequins that move easily inside a shallow cavity. Heavier or oversized sequins may stick or jam against the foam walls. Crafter's Companion Shaker Sequins come in a 50g pot of mixed iridescent shades, giving you plenty of variety for one project. The mix of colors adds depth without requiring you to buy multiple pots.

How to make a shaker card with sequins

  1. Cut a window in your card front: Use a craft knife or die-cutting machine to cut a shape (circle, square, or rectangle) through the front panel of your card. Keep the edges clean so the foam tape adheres evenly. Common mistake: cutting the window too large for the foam tape width. Leave at least a 1/8-inch border for the tape to grip.
  2. Attach foam tape around the window: Apply double-sided foam tape around the entire perimeter of the window on the back side of the card front. Press firmly and butt the ends together so there are no gaps. Checkpoint: run your finger along the seam to feel for any openings. A gap will let sequins escape.
  3. Add a clear acetate sheet behind the window: Cut a piece of acetate or transparency film slightly larger than the window. Stick it to the foam tape on the back of the card front. This creates the transparent front of the shaker cavity.
  4. Fill the cavity with shaker sequins: Turn the card front over so the acetate side is down. Spoon a small amount of Crafter's Companion Shaker Sequins into the cavity. Start with about half a teaspoon—you can always add more, but too many sequins will not move freely. Common mistake: overfilling. Sequins need empty space to shift. If they stack, remove some.
  5. Seal the back of the cavity: Apply a second layer of foam tape on top of the first, or use a piece of cardstock cut slightly larger than the window. Press firmly to seal the back. The sequins should now be trapped between the acetate and the back layer. Checkpoint: hold the card up to light and tilt it. If any sequins stick between the foam tape layers, the seal is not tight.
  6. Attach the shaker panel to your card base: Apply adhesive to the back of the assembled shaker panel and mount it onto a folded card base. Press evenly around the edges to avoid warping the foam.
