Quick Answer
Most immersion blender start failures are caused by a loose power connection, a tripped thermal safety switch, or a locked blade assembly. Check each before assuming the motor is dead.
Why Immersion Blenders Stop Suddenly
Immersion blenders are built with safety features that can stop the motor when something is wrong. A locked blade from food jamming, a thermal cut-off after extended use, or a loose cord connection are the most common reasons. These are designed to protect the motor and the user.
If your Breville immersion blender won't start, the issue is rarely a complete motor failure. The Control Grip and All in One models include a trigger switch that must be fully depressed, and the blade guard must be properly locked into place. A partial connection can prevent power from reaching the motor.
When to Stop Troubleshooting and Seek Help
If the blender still does not run after checking all connections and clearing any jams, the motor or internal wiring may be damaged. Attempting to open the sealed housing can void the warranty and create a shock hazard. Contact Breville customer support or an authorized service center for repair or replacement options.
Immersion Blender Diagnosis Checklist
- Symptom: No power, no light, no sound: Unplug the blender and inspect the cord for damage. Plug it into a different outlet that you know works. If the blender still shows no sign of power, the cord or internal fuse may be blown. If a known working outlet does not power the blender, the problem is internal.
- Symptom: Motor hums but blade won't spin: Unplug immediately. Check the blade shaft for food debris or a jammed ingredient. Clear any obstruction with a wooden skewer or by hand (while unplugged). Reassemble and test. A jammed blade can trigger a thermal cut-off. Let the blender cool for 15 minutes before retrying.
- Symptom: Motor runs briefly then stops: This is a classic thermal overload symptom. The blender's internal thermostat shuts off power to prevent damage. Unplug, let it cool for 30 minutes, and reduce the load next time (blend in smaller batches or use a lower speed). Repeated thermal trips may indicate a failing motor bearing or a worn seal. Consider replacement if it happens frequently.
- Symptom: Trigger feels loose or does not click: On models with a trigger switch (like the Control Grip), a broken or stuck trigger will not complete the circuit. Try pressing the trigger firmly and evenly. If it feels loose or does not click, the switch may need service. A broken trigger switch is not user-serviceable. Contact Breville support.
Products That Can Help
-
the Control Grip™: The Control Grip’s unique anti-suction technology means less liquid spilling out of your bowl and the ergonomic trigger grip gives your hand a natural position making use easier. The trigger grip requires a full press to start, so if the blender won't run, check that you're gripping the trigger completely rather than assuming a mechanical fault.

-
the All in One™: The All in One is a multi-function kitchen tool - slice, chop, grate, puree, or mash. The Adjustable Slicing Disc has 18 different thickness settings. If the blade assembly is not fully locked after switching attachments, the safety interlock will prevent the motor from starting. Always verify the locking ring is tight.
