Quick answer
To sew woven labels into bags and garments, fold the label edges under, pin it in place, and stitch close to the folded edge with a straight or zigzag stitch. Use a short stitch length and test on a scrap to prevent puckering.
Why label placement matters
Where you place a woven label affects both the look and the durability. On garments, a side seam label sits flat and won't irritate the neck. On bags, a label near the top edge or inside pocket is visible without interfering with the structure.
For folded-edge labels, the fold creates a clean finish that resists fraying. End-fold labels like the Me Made End Fold are designed to be tucked into a seam, while side-seam labels work best when stitched onto a flat surface.
Choosing the right stitch
A straight stitch is simple and works for most woven labels, but a narrow zigzag or triple stitch can add flexibility on stretchy fabrics. Always match the thread color to the label edge or use a contrasting thread for a decorative touch.
Test on a scrap piece of fabric first to check the stitch tension and length. This prevents skipped stitches or fabric bunching when you sew the actual label.
How to sew woven labels: step by step
- Prepare the label: If using a side-seam label, fold under the raw edges about 1/4 inch (6 mm) and press with an iron. For an end-fold label, simply unfold it and align it with the seam edge. Check that the label is centered and straight before pinning.
- Pin the label: Place the label on the fabric right side up, or tuck it into the seam with the right side facing the seam allowance. Use pins or fabric clips to hold it in place, making sure it lies flat without wrinkles. Avoid pinning through the label's printed area if it might leave permanent holes.
- Stitch the label: Using a straight stitch (2.5–3.0 mm length) or a narrow zigzag, sew close to the folded edge or along the seam line. Backstitch at the beginning and end to secure the threads. Keep the fabric taut but not stretched to prevent puckering.
- Trim and finish: Trim any loose threads and press the label flat. If the label is in a seam, press the seam open or to one side to make the label lie flat. For bags, reinforce the label with a second row of stitching if it will be handled frequently.
